Protection Rules by Foundation First K9:
Protection will take place on Sunday, from 10am - 4pm. There will be a running order determined prior to event start. If you are registering for Protection, but you ARE NOT registering for the 40-Yard Dog Dash, you need to be at Foundation First K9 by 9:30am on Sunday.
Each dog gets 1 round
Decoy will be judge, no exceptions.
Dogs showing dangerous behaviors will be disqualified for the safety of all.
Handler is required to maintain control of dog, on leash, at all times unless directed otherwise. Failure to control your dog will result in point loss or disqualification.
5 points for each task, total of 25 points available for each level.
NOVICE: Entry level drive test, no previous protection training required. May provide your own toy.
1. Neutrality to non-threatening stranger, decoy with no equipment, friendly contact with handler, handshake (elbow bump). Point loss for dog showing fear, avoidance, or aggression. Disqualification for biting without provocation.
2. Prey Drive test: flirt pole, luring, teasing with toy or rag. Point loss for not engaging, fear, or avoidance.
3. Reaction to unknown low-level threat – barking or moving toward to investigate unknown threat. Point loss for no engagement, fear, or avoidance.
4. Reaction to different surfaces (slick floors, tarp) Point loss for no engagement, fear, or avoidance.
5. Reaction to noises (dropped pan, rattle stick, gravel in bottle, etc. at a distance) Point loss for no engagement, fear, or avoidance.
INTERMEDIATE: Basic protection experience, will engage decoy with toy or sleeve with confidence.
1. Neutrality to non-threatening stranger, decoy with no equipment, friendly contact with handler, handshake or elbow bump. Point loss for no engagement, fear, or avoidance. Disqualification for biting without provocation.
2. Drive evaluation with large tug or training sleeve, dog should show interest, come out to the end of leash, bite and hold sleeve on rope with some distance from decoy. Point loss for regrips, loose grip, Point loss for no engagement, fear, or avoidance.
3. Confident engagement with decoy and equipment with low level to moderate pressure from decoy. Equipment will be decoy wearing sleeve. Point loss for loose grip, moving around on bites, or attempting to bite anything other than targeted sleeve, non-engagement, fear, or avoidance.
4. Sleeved decoy with noise distraction, dog will bite sleeve with noise distraction (rattle stick, rattle can with no contact to dog) Point loss for loose grip, moving around on bites, or attempting to bite anything other than targeted sleeve, non-engagement, fear, or avoidance.
5. Introduction to decoy in suit – will dog show engagement. Not necessary for dog to bite suit. Point loss for no engagement, fear, or avoidance.
ADVANCED: Substantial training in protection to include titled or police dogs, or advanced levels of skill training.
1. Neutrality to non-threatening stranger, decoy with no equipment, friendly contact with handler, handshake or elbow bump. Point loss for no engagement, fear, or avoidance. Disqualification for biting without provocation.
2. 25 yard send on decoy in suit with stick. Decoy will not strike dog. Handler to go to and leash dog. Verbal out with 2 tries. A verbal out means no correction. If you use a correction, there will be a point loss. If you use an *e-collar but want to avoid the point loss, the remote must remain visible to judge and scribe - they must be able to see that your hands are not on the remote. Point loss for no engagement, fear, or avoidance, multiple bites, loose grip, not verbal outing with 2 tries, verbal outing with e-collar or tab, engaging anyone or anything other than decoy.
3. Handler will send dog from doorway to decoy inside a room. Point loss for no engagement, fear, or avoidance, multiple bites, loose grip, engaging anyone or anything other than decoy.
4. Handler will deploy dog into or on a vehicle to engage decoy. Point loss for no engagement, fear, or avoidance, multiple bites, loose grip, engaging anyone or anything other than decoy, disengaging threat before asked by handler.
5. Multiple decoys on field, one threatening and two neutral all advancing toward dog. Dog must engage threatening decoy upon docoy’s signal and ignore neutral ones. Threatening decoy will engage dog and neutral ones will disengage contact. Point loss for no engagement, fear, or avoidance, multiple bites, loose grip, engaging anyone or anything other than targeted decoy, disengaging threat before asked by handler.
* Point loss will occur each time e-collar is engaged. Also, most dog sports do not allow e-collars in competition. We allowed it in the first series of 3 events for Protection, but TDG will eventually change this rule to no stim collars so it gives everyone time to train without.
Awards will be given out to top 3 dogs in each Division at the end of the day.
